Black Pick Student Spotlight: Aarav Bharadwaj
Six Years of Dedication, One Incredible Milestone
When Aarav first started taking lessons at Guitar Ninjas in 2020, he was just four years old, sitting cross-legged with a three-quarter-size guitar that he could barely balance on his lap. Six years later, he earned his Black Pick, marking an incredible milestone in his musical journey.
For Aarav's mom, Sri, watching his growth has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. What began as an opportunity to introduce her young son to music has developed into a journey filled with discipline, confidence, and a genuine love of playing.
From the Basics to Rocking Out
Aarav has always loved learning guitar, but his progress has gone far beyond mastering the fundamentals. According to his instructor, Frankie, one of his greatest strengths is his determination to become a better musician every day.
In the beginning, Aarav needed more guidance with the smaller details of playing. Today, he's increasingly able to recognize and correct those details on his own, paying closer attention to his technique and the sound he's producing.
He's also learned to tackle challenging guitar solos and fast riffs that once required significant practice. Now, he can often learn difficult passages in just a few days, reproducing them with impressive accuracy.
Frankie credits Aarav's success to two qualities: passion and attention to detail.
One of her favorite memories has been watching him progress from learning the basics to figuring out songs by ear. Seeing his confidence grow—and the joy on his face when he plays something well—has made teaching him especially rewarding.
The Moments That Made It All Worthwhile
For Sri, there have been countless proud moments along the way. One that stands out was when Aarav reached the Purple level and began practicing with greater focus and consistency.
She remembers the first time he played Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" particularly well. Hearing him perform the song with confidence made her realize just how much he was capable of achieving.
Other milestones include being named Student of the Year in 2023 and jamming with fellow musicians at the Orange Christmas celebrations in 2025.
Through it all, Frankie has played an important role in Aarav's development, encouraging him and celebrating even the smallest victories. Sri describes her support as a blessing, noting how much it has helped Aarav's confidence grow.
Now, earning his Black Pick represents much more than reaching the final level of a curriculum. For Aarav and his family, it's a celebration of six years of hard work, perseverance, and personal growth.
Advice for Other Guitar Ninjas Families
Sri believes one of the most important things parents can do is help their children establish a consistent practice routine while celebrating progress along the way. Whether a student learns a difficult passage, masters a new song, or advances to another level, recognizing those accomplishments can help keep them motivated.
She also encourages families to create opportunities for children to share their music with others, whether by recording a performance or playing for friends and relatives.
Frankie's advice is equally simple: Stay passionate and never give up.
Aarav's journey is a wonderful example of what can happen when a student's determination is supported by encouraging teachers and family members. His Black Pick celebrates not only how far he's come, but also the musician he's continuing to become.
Congratulations, Aarav, on earning your Black Pick! We're excited to see where your musical journey takes you next.
