Black Pick Student Spotlight: Yuki Downey
Yuki has been studying guitar at Guitar Ninjas since 2019 and has become a wonderful example of what consistent effort and a growth mindset can accomplish. While guitar is her primary instrument, she has also explored piano along the way, always bringing curiosity and dedication to her musical journey.
According to her instructor, Frankie Guerra, one of Yuki’s greatest strengths is her determination to play every song to the best of her ability. Rather than becoming discouraged by challenges, she approaches them as opportunities to learn and improve.
Over the years, Frankie has watched Yuki push through frustrations that might have caused other students to give up. Instead, she has continued to grow stronger and more confident as a musician.
One of the biggest breakthroughs in her journey came through improvisation. At first, Yuki felt unsure about creating solos and coming up with ideas on the spot during jam sessions. Like many musicians, she worried about playing the “wrong” notes. Through patience, practice, and perseverance, she has become increasingly comfortable trusting her ears, taking risks, and expressing herself creatively.
Frankie also recalls being especially impressed when Yuki began learning some of her favorite songs entirely by ear, figuring out difficult parts on her own and even creating guitar tabs to share online. What started as a challenge has become one of her favorite hobbies.
Yuki’s Black Pick achievement is the result of years of dedication, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishment and excited to see where her musical journey takes her next.
Congratulations, Yuki!
